Captain's Corner: Kingfish season in full swing

Published March 12, 2012

Kingfish action: Kingfish season has officially started. We landed numerous kings in 50 feet this past week. Expect action from all other depths too. A stray bonito or a Spanish mackerel was all that we found on notorious spring hot spots, then on our third stop, four lines were deployed: A downrigger set at 30 feet, another at 15 feet and two lines on the surface. Our roll of 1 knot was interrupted by frantic bait at the surface then all four lines screamed in all directions.

Tip: Kingfish are on the move. A good location one day might not be hot the next day.

Even more fun: Further offshore, giant amberjacks took our offerings. We drifted over a large wreck in 90 feet and had nonstop action from jacks, many 40 pounds.
