Captain's Corner: Kingfish still hot heading into fall

What's hot: The fall kingfish run should be an exceptional one since we have been catching them so well offshore.

Tackle: There are many ways to target the speedsters. Light-tackle anglers can anchor on a good stretch of hard bottom and chum with live pilchards. A small trace of wire in front of a 3/0-4/0 hook should get the job done. Stuff the reel with as much line as possible because there will more than likely be a larger female among all of those smaller males.

Technique: Beach fishermen will typically fish close to the swim buoys. Slow troll baits such as Spanish mackerel, shad, ladyfish and mullet. Clearwater to Redington Pier, and Treasure Island to "the Don" or Pass-a-Grille will hold nice fish this season.
