Captain's Corner: Kings, gags still available

Anglers have been rewarded this month with numerous species of fish. Kingfish are still available at many locations. Recent migrations of gag grouper also have moved into the same depths. Anglers can enjoy targeting both of these types of fish at many of the same locations. Rocky areas in 20-50 feet of water are the most productive. Anglers have the rest of this month to target gag grouper before the season closes. The two most productive methods for catching these two types of fish are by trolling artificial lures and by using live bait. Both have been working great since the fish are extremely hungry, feeding heavily between cold fronts. Trolling artificial spoons can cover more bottom when searching for fish since speeds for trolling are normally 4-7 mph. Employing deeper-running lures will attract gag grouper. Kingfish are eating at all depths. Hog snapper fishing also has been good. Anglers have been fishing depths from 20-40 feet with decent success.
