Captain's Corner: Looking for kingfish

Hot spot: We still have kingfish at many locations. Water temps along Clearwater Beach are teetering around 80, which will send most of the kings somewhere else. The stubborn fish remain around a steady food source. Large schools of threadfin herring have kept them near the Clearwater reef.

Hot spot 2: Another place we found large macks was at about 60 feet of water, due west of Clearwater. Again, large schools of Spanish sardines have been attracting predators. Bring lots of sabiki rigs, since kings often attack sardines as they are reeled up from the bottom. If you see the bait staying extremely tight to the sandy bottom, that's normally a sign they being fed on.
