Captain's Corner

Captains Corner: Mackerel are around, bait can be the challenge

What's hot: Finding enough bait has been a challenge for many of those looking to catch king mackerel. Some anglers have even turned to using pinfish. If you spend enough time looking, it is possible to find bait but it's not as easy as usual. There is still an abundance of Spanish mackerel along the beach and on some offshore reefs. Look for diving terns to locate them. Even if you see just a lone tern diving, check that spot. Some anglers have been using smaller Spanish mackerel as bait for king mackerel.

Bottom fishing: Grouper are still a good bet in nearshore areas. Depths of 25 to 35 feet are producing a good number of keeper black and red grouper. Many of the larger ledges are picked over, so there are fewer keeper fish. Search the hard bottom and watch for smaller ledges for a "show" of fish on the bottom machine. If in doubt, drift the area before dropping anchor. Anchoring usually produces better catches, and it helps to set up a chum slick. Keep a free-lined bait in the slick for any passing mackerel.
