Captain's Corner

Captain's Corner: Mackerel are very hungry

What's hot: Mackerel are demolishing baits of all types. Live sardines or shrimp and even shiny, metal traditional spoons will convince one to grab what he believes is an easy meal.

What else: Cobia are starting to show up in Tampa Bay. An outfit rigged with slightly heavier line than the standard "flats, light tackle" setup is preferred. These fish are known for their tenacity while on the line and especially when they hit the deck of a boat. They typically go ballistic and can destroy equipment and blast open tackle boxes. On a recent trip, cobia responded to our chum block. We caught a nice one, but two others pushed our tackle to the limits.

Seasonal: Hurry up and finish repairs to tackle, trailers and anything else. Shops are about to be swamped with business, especially when school lets out for the summer.
