Captain's Corner: Make clean water the focus after bad weather

Clean water: Fishing after periods of foul weather can prove challenging. Search for wind-protected areas that experienced minimal runoff to find clean water. The presence of mullet schools, stingrays and wading birds will indicate productive flats.

Keep moving: Artificial lures are the best tools for finding fish. Spoons or topwater plugs allow you to cover a lot of water quickly. Fan-cast ahead of the boat, throwing with the wind, while drifting or moving slowly via trolling motor. When fish are found, stop and methodically work that zone or make repeated passes through that area. Switching to a subsurface lure will often entice more strikes.
