October is the time to be on the water. With a slight cold front pushing down this week, it should make the water temperature perfect for fishing. There are Spanish mackerel, big schools of jacks and black tip sharks all over the bay and beaches. While you can catch the jacks on your normal inshore tackle, you will have to bump off your leader to about 60 pounds if you hope to land Spanish mackerel and sharks. Most of the big schools that were around in August and September have split up. Some smaller schools can be found from Fort De Soto to upper Tampa Bay. On extremely low water, look for deep holes just off the grass flats: The redfish will move just far enough to find water they are comfortable in. The snook bite has really turned on this past week. They continue to hold on the grass flats for now. On high tide they have been holding pretty tight to the mangrove line. A nice scaled sardine belly-hooked has worked best. Using a lot of chum will get the party started.
