What's cold: The recent cool blast has kept anglers in port. But it also will keep the king and Spanish mackerel around for a while longer.
What's hot: Giant Spanish mackerel have inundated Tampa Bay and seem focused on their mission: kill everything in sight. Big ones, up to 6 pounds, are ripping drag systems all over the bay. The size of small kingfish, they can give a thrill to any angler.
Tip: Incoming tides seem to be best. Wait for a calm day with good water movement, and deploy a chum block to bring multiple species from afar. Cobia and sharks, among other species, are a welcome byproduct. Hooks with a long shank or single-strand thin wire will help combat "bite-offs" common while mackerel fishing. Extra hooks are a must.
