Captain's Corner

Captain's Corner: Pompano action takes off

This is the best pompano action in four years. They are pretty easy to locate and are a great size overall. It has been rare to catch a small one. Strides to eliminate illegal poaching activity have been successful, and our pompano fishery is excellent. Pompano targeting requires knowledge of "where to go." And they move. I have not caught pompano in their normal location this summer. The bridges have not been that good. Try depths of more than 10 feet in general, it is rare to catch one any shallower in Tampa Bay. Any rod you have use light in general to medium with a fluorocarbon leader and a pompano jig with a teaser. Loop knot these two items together and make sure you keep bumping up and down off the bottom. Pompano fight great and I consider them the best fish to eat.

Neil Taylor charters kayak fishing trips in the Tampa Bay area and can be reached at strikethreekayakfishing.com and (727) 692-6345.

Thursday was an off-day for the Rays, who are coming off a solid western swing. I assume there was no rest for the tag-team Rays baseball brain trust of Matt Silverman, Erik Neander and Chaim Bloom, whose job it is to improve this team in advance of the trade deadline. They've done a good job …
