Captain's Corner: Prime time for redfish

Tim Whitfield

What's hot: Fishing south around the skyway has produced redfish and trout in excellent numbers. Be prepared to fight the crowds for bait and for a prime spot for redfish. Fishing in the upper bay has been on fire with catches of mackerel and redfish. These fish are still eating shrimp. Use a long shank hook for the mackerel; they have been hammering the free lined shrimp. The redfish have been roaming the sand flats and are extremely spooky, so a long cast is a must.

Tip: Snook are chewing if you find the sardines. If the fronts stay away, spring will be in full swing.
