Captain's Corner

Captains corner: Spanish mackerel hammer hard-bodied plugs over structure

What's hot: We've targeted Spanish mackerel around the St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island and Madeira Beach artificial reefs the past few trips because of their size and abundance.

Tactics: We've changed our tactics this year from trolling No. 1 planers and No. 1 or 0 gold or silver spoons to locating structures that jut 15 feet off the bottom and drifting over them while casting small hard-bodied twitch baits that are normally used inshore for trout and redfish. We use 10-pound-test braided line and a short length of 40-pound monofilament leader. Many of these mackerel are in the 20- to 25-inch range. Mixed in are schoolie-size kingfish that will strike these same plugs.

Dave Zalewski charters the Lucky Too out of Madeira Beach. Call (727) 397-8815.
