Captain's Corner: Spanish mackerel lure sharks

Larry Blue

What's hot: An abundance of Spanish mackerel is contributing to the sudden wealth of sharks. We've been catching blacktip and bull sharks, with a few hammerheads mixed in. Finding a school of mackerel actively feeding can help find sharks. When a ball of bait gets concentrated on the surface, the Spanish mackerel press in on it. At times we can see the sharks just below, chasing the mackerel. It's a vicious circle of life that never fails to entertain.

Tips: Chumming can help attract the sharks, maybe too close. On our most recent outing, the baitfish tried to hide under the boat, but that didn't stop the carnage of the mackerel and sharks crashing them. It was easy pickings for us. Simply dropping a hooked mackerel bait over the side got immediate results.
