Captain's Corner: Speckled trout search

Speckled trout are the best game in town. Cold water can make for challenging conditions for all species, but with sunlight the afternoon feed for trout is very good. We have a large population of excellent-sized speckled trout. Light-spinning or bait-casting outfits are adequate. Gear up with a short piece of light leader line and take your pick of lures. The jig is the most universal. A one-eighth ounce jighead with any plastic tail is a trout catcher. Topwater lures will trick some of the largest trout. Keep the pace of the lures slow to adjust to the cold fish. Lures moved slowly right next to the bottom will get strikes. Trout will be predominantly in areas where the bottom is sea grass. The limit for speckled trout in this region is four fish per angler at 15-20 inches. One of your four fish can be more than 20 inches.

Neil Taylor charters kayak fishing trips in the Tampa Bay area and can be reached at strikethreekayakfishing.com and (727) 692-6345.
