Captain's Corner: Target mangrove snapper

What's hot: Mangrove snapper fishing inside Tampa Bay will stay among the best bets into next month. We caught more than three dozen Saturday morning along the edge of the ships channel nearly 5 miles inside the Sunshine Skyway bridge. Others have had success at major bridges and artificial reefs in the bay. The tides associated with the current new moon will keep mangrove snapper chewing in the early morning and just before dark.

Tips: Juvenile greenbacks have joined the preferred whitebait on many flats near Snell Isle and Pinellas Point. Mangos prefer the heartier, friskier whitebait.

What else: Tarpon are crashing balled-up bait schools near Clearwater Pass and cruising the edge of the beaches of Manatee County. A bunch have been lingering in the "bootleg" south of the Gandy Bridge.

Jay Mastry charters Jaybird out of St. Petersburg. Call (727) 321-2142.
