Captain's Corner: Target snook, redfish, trout on flats

What's hot: March and April are typically our best months for flats fishing. And so far, so good. Snook have been great with small to giant, overslot ones. I have been pleasantly surprised with the big trophy snook caught. We've been catching about 12 snook per day, and among those, a few have been over slot. Redfish also have been doing well. On most days, I've been getting plenty mixed in with the mullet schools. Most have been 18-30 inches with a few bigger coming on lower tide days. Trout, including gator trout, also have been great. Most have been 16-25 inches, with some close to 30.

Tip: The best bait over the next few months for all three is live, whether it's sardines, pinfish or shrimp. But don't forget cut ladyfish for big redfish and snook. I also step up my leader size from 20- to 30-pound fluorocarbon with a 2/0 circle hook.
