Captain's Corner

Captain's Corner: Tarpon are the target

What's hot: Now is the best time of the year to target tarpon. Silver kings are cruising the beaches on their yearly migration up and down the coast. This week's strong new moon tides and the strong full moon tides in two weeks provide some of the best action you will ever see. Tarpon will congregate in the 90-foot hole off Egmont Key, waiting for the falling tide. Once the current is at its fastest, crabs will start to go out with the tide. Tarpon are in the hole waiting.

Tactics: Two of the biggest problems I see are people dipping crabs in the "drift,'' and running on plane through the pack of boats that are fishing. Crabs are all over the place; there is no reason to interrupt everyone's drift. Once the drift is over, go out and around the pack of boats (not through the fish). Running on plane disrupts the fish and causes unnecessary wakes.

Rob Gorta charters out of St. Petersburg and can be reached at captainrobgorta.com or (727) 647-7606.

ST. PETERSBURG — It didn't take CF Kevin Kiermaier long to make his presence felt during his return Friday to the Rays lineup. Kiermaier pretended to have Mariners DH Nelson Cruz's first-inning line drive lined up even as the ball went past him to his right and to the wall.
