Captain's Corner: Tarpon, mackerel, kings out in force

What's hot: With light wind and calm seas forecast, a variety of opportunities will be available to anglers this weekend. Clean water and ample bait have drawn mackerel and kingfish to 20-foot depths along our gulf beaches. A cooler, more favorable water temperature has some kings settling in on deeper wrecks and reefs. Others will be in the Egmont ship channel; we caught some near the buoys in the mid channel this week.

Tips: Tarpon have been showing up in their usual places, including the Sunshine Skyway bridge and well inside Tampa Bay. Gadsden Point, Mermaid Point and the area known as the bootleg often hold early season silver kings. Next week's full moon will likely have them popping crabs at the Skyway and the passes on either side of Egmont Key, particularly on the afternoon outgoing tide.

What else: Pompano have shown up, and land-based anglers can get in on the action on the south Sunshine Skyway fishing pier, both piers on Fort De Soto and the Tierra Verde bridge. Boaters will find them in our passes leading to the gulf and the major bridges in Tampa Bay. Use any color jig you want — as long as it's yellow.
