Captain's Corner: Time to get baitfish

What's hot: is the hot topic with hatchlings growing. Carry cast nets with varying mesh sizes. Use a quarter-inch first then go bigger as needed. The downside of the smaller mesh is many of the best baits are holding in deeper water, where a quarter-inch won't sink fast enough.

Tip: Some bait shops carry crimp-on leads, which attach to the existing lead line of cast nets to increase the sink rate. These weights must be evenly distributed around the circumference of the net to remain balanced and open correctly.

Technique: Available baitfish typically mean hungry fish are nearby. Typical targets now include Spanish mackerel and mangrove snapper.
