Captain's Corner: Time to target tarpon

What's hot: Tarpon are starting their migration down the west coast beaches. Watch for silver flashes as fish roll to breath air. Any beach in the bay area is a good place to start. I use my trolling motor on anchor mode to stay in position. Pods of fish will eventually move right toward the boat. Once a pod is located, I switch to manual mode on the trolling motor to carefully get into position.

Bait: I use a 12-foot cast net to throw for bait. Scaled sardines ("whitebait") is the top choice. Threadfin herring ("greenbacks") are just as good, but die quickly once their scales fall off.

Tactic: Approach schools with care. I use my trolling motor on the lowest setting. Tarpon head to deeper water when spooked, making it difficult to sight cast.
