Captain's Corner: Uncertainty turns into mackerel

Unexpected call: With all of the wind and rain last week, we couldn't get offshore. But I got a call early Friday morning from a Scottish gentleman about taking him and his father fishing. I indicated seas might be a problem, but we agreed to meet at my boat to try our luck. I was concerned all of the fresh rainwater might make nearshore fishing a challenge.

The results: Heading out of John's Pass, we found a "tide rip" made up of clear salt water on the west side and dark-stained fresh water on the east. Trolling small gold spoons, we weaved along the tide rip for about a mile and caught some of the biggest mackerel of the season. If we left the tide rip, there were few bites. But once we made our way back, the catching resumed. The gentlemen were quite pleased to do some Florida-style fishing before heading back overseas.
