Captain's Corner: Warmer water keeping fishing active in flats

Jason Prieto

Jason Prieto

The warm weather reminds me of why I live in Florida, and it has kept the fishing on the flats. Snook fishing has been the highlight of my guided trips. We are catching a ton of juveniles as they stage up around the rivers and docks for winter. The key this time of year is to read your water temperatures. They are still in the mid 70s, telling fish that it's more like November than December. In the same spots where we have caught snook, you can expect to catch a bunch of smaller redfish and trout of nice size. This is the time of year to fish around the fronts and, more , watch to the winds. Be safe and watch the weather before you head out.

Jason Prieto is a full-time fishing guide and can be reached at (813) 727-9890.
