Captain's Corner: Warmer weather heats up fishing

What's cold: The recent cold weather limited us. But this weekend looks good. Before the cold front, the bite was better in the afternoon with an outgoing tide, so stick with that. For bait, head to the Skyway pier.

What's hot: Trout and redfish are all over Fort De Soto. Big trout are moving out of the shallows and into about 4 feet. Scaled sardines are the bait of choice. They've been hitting them on a slow retrieve just over the grass line. Use cut bait for redfish, which remain easily spooked with the water so clear.

What's else: Four- and 5-pound sheepshead are being caught on local bridges and structures. Go at the start of the incoming tide. The most success has been with a No. 1 hook with a split shot. Use live shrimp broken in half, though fiddler crabs also have produced.
