Captain's Corner: Watch out for sharks

What's hot: There have been a fair number of hammerhead sharks relatively close to shore. Hammerheads have a reputation for feeding on tarpon, and some anglers have been surprised by their vicious attacks. Hammerheads might migrate along with the tarpon schools and take advantage of a distracted one. They are also especially fond of stingrays. Offshore, common blacktip and blacktip spinner sharks are following what few mackerel schools we find. Normally, we have an abundance of mackerel. But so far, they have fallen short of expectations. Even so, when you find mackerel, you should find sharks close by.

Tips: We prefer to release sharks, especially bigger ones. If customers want to take one — given certain sharks are legal — and it won't go to waste, we let them. Sharks are creatures of marvel and mystery. They should be revered and respected so everyone can admire them in life.
