Captain's Corner: Water cloudier but bite still strong

What's hot: Breezy westerly winds have stirred things up a bit in Tampa Bay. The water clarity has decreased after recent heavy rains and seasonal plankton growth, but the bite is still good. Though mackerel love clear water, they are here in good numbers. The farther south, the better. Fewer fish are being caught as far north as the Gandy Bridge.

Tips: This time of year, versatility can really come into play. For instance, when a recent mackerel bite went sour, we fished on the bottom and caught all sorts of species. Sometimes the plans deviate from the expected and must be amended. The baitfish are about to spawn and therefore are becoming much harder to obtain in upper Tampa Bay. Soon the new fry will be here and snapper bait will be plentiful.
