Bay area charter captain Doug Hemmer dies

Doug Hemmer, a longtime area charter boat captain and contributor to the Tampa Bay Times' Captain's Corner feature, died Friday. He was 59.

Mr. Hemmer was born in New Jersey but moved to St. Petersburg at age 1 and grew up there. He worked more than 10 years at Ted Peters Famous Smoked Fish and has served as a charter boat captain for more than 25 years.

The family still is working on arrangements.
