Helmsman's sons garner Top finishes

America's Cup helmsman Ed Baird isn't the only local sailor bringing the spotlight to St. Petersburg. Baird's sons, Nic, 16, and Ty, 17, were part of the Shorecrest team that tied for first in the state during the 2012-13 high school sailing season. Nic had top finishes in several national and North American events, winning the US Sailing Chubb Junior Championship for the Smythe Singlehanded Trophy and the US Junior Olympic Festival in Houston. Ty was fourth.

Shooters get taste of Olympic range

Several bay area athletes returned from competing this summer in the USA Shooting National Championships and the Scholastic Clay Target Program Olympic Style National Championships at the Olympic Training Center Shotgun Range in Colorado. The dual competition drew more than 200 shooters from the United States, Canada and China. Locals included Madison Nelson, 17, Ethan Erkfitz and Jacob Hochhausler, both 16, David Telford, 13, Peter Meola and Gabriel Shandles, both 12, and Joshua Vega, 10.
