Packing for the pier

A grocery cart (cost: about $25) can be converted for pier duty. Use tie straps to fasten 11/2-inch PVC rod holders ($3) to the basket. Place cardboard on the bottom and/or sides to keep gear from falling through.

Soft tackle bag with plastic trays for storing everything from hooks to pliers ($40).

Sabiki rod and reel ($79) for catching baitfish. Rod is hollow and sensitive to feel the bait hit.

Propane lantern ($30) provides light for the angler or can be hung close to the water to attract bait and fish.

Spinning rod and reel (combos start around $50) is the best outfit for casting out from the pier.

Conventional rod and reel (combos start around $75) are good for straight-down bottom fishing.

Pier landing net ($30) with a 32-inch diameter and 100 feet of rope for hauling up the catch over the rails.

Don't guess where the fish are. The Aqua-View underwater camera ($329) has 100 feet of cable, a battery and 4-inch monitor.

Grappling hook (with line, about $9) comes in handy for retrieving equipment that falls off the pier.
