PHOENIX — Will Venable homered and drove in three runs, Robbie Erlin pitched six effective innings in his return to the majors and the Padres avoided a three-game sweep. Venable drove in the first of the Padres' two runs off Wade Miley in the first and gave them a cushion with a two-run homer in the eighth. He's hitting .390 in August and has an eight-game hitting streak.
