Penguins shut out Senators for first victory of the season

PITTSBURGH — Evgeni Malkin scored his first goal in nearly seven months and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 22 shots for his 39th career shutout as the Penguins beat the Senators 2-0 for their first win of the season Thursday.

Rookie Daniel Sprong picked up the first goal of his career for Pittsburgh.

Craig Anderson made 34 saves for Ottawa, but the Senators failed to muster significant momentum a night after dropping seven goals on the Blue Jackets. Ottawa went 0-for-3 on the power play and rarely tested Fleury over the final two periods.

Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby was pointless again, making him without a point in four straight games for just the third time in his NHL career.

The Penguins went into the game scuffling after the franchise's worst start in a decade, managing all of three goals during an 0-3-0 stretch that left their stars frustrated and coach Mike Johnston imploring them — again — to shoot the puck more.

Game highlights: Braden Holtby stopped 26 shots, Alex Ovechkin scored a goal in his return to the lineup and the host Capitals beat the punchless Blackhawks 4-1. Ovechkin was benched Tuesday night in Washington's 5-0 loss to the Sharks after missing practice that morning. He said he overslept after accidentally setting his alarm for 8:30 p.m. instead of 8:30 a.m. … The host Islanders scored four unanswered goals after going down 2-0 and Thomas Greiss made 44 saves as they hung on for a 4-3 win over the Predators.

Around the league: Sharks center Logan Couture went down with an apparent right leg injury during a practice drill and was helped off the ice by teammates. He was being evaluated, the team said. Couture, seen on crutches with a protective boot on his right foot and ankle, wouldn't comment to the San Jose Mercury News. … Red Wings forward Johan Franzen was put on injured reverse with concussion symptoms stemming from a head injury he suffered in January. … Devils forward Jordin Tootoo was fined $2,217.74 by the league for a dangerous trip of Predators defenseman Seth Jones on Tuesday.
