Marlins pitcher Jennings hit in head by drive

PITTSBURGH — Marlins LHP Dan Jennings was taken to a hospital after being hit in the head by a line drive against the Pirates on Thursday night.

Manager Mike Redmond said Jennings' eyes were open and he was responding to questions from the medical staff on the mound. Redmond said he didn't have a report on Jennings' condition after the game.

Jennings was struck by a liner off the bat of Jordy Mercer in the seventh. The reliever momentarily stumbled before going to his knees.

Jennings stood up to get in the cart. He put a hand up to acknowledge the crowd as he was driven away.

phillies-dodgers trade: The Dodgers acquired RHP Roberto Hernandez from the Phillies for two players to be named later or cash considerations. Hernandez, 33, is 6-8 with a 3.87 ERA. He spent last year with Tampa Bay. Meanwhile, Phillies LHP Cliff Lee might not throw again until October or November because of a recurrence of a left elbow injury. Surgery is not an option, GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said. Lee is expected to be ready for spring training.

angels-indians trade: The Angels acquired RHP Vinnie Pestano, 29, who has split time with the Indians and Triple-A Columbus this season. Cleveland got minor-league RHP Michael Clevinger, 23.

blue jays: 3B Brett Lawrie went on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Wednesday, with a left oblique strain. He played three innings after returning from missing more than a month with a broken right index finger.

nationals: RHP Stephen Strasburg is scheduled to start against the Braves tonight. In 14 starts against Atlanta, Strasburg is 3-5 with a 4.04 ERA, his highest ERA against any team he has faced more than three times.

rangers: C Chris Gimenez, a former Ray, was removed from the paternity leave list and designated for assignment. C Geovany Soto is eligible to be activated from the DL today.

red sox: 1B David Ortiz was scratched against the Cardinals because of concerns about wet grounds.

rockies: SS Troy Tulowitzki (left hip flexor strain) has begun baseball activities. He is eligible to come off the 15-day DL but hasn't been running at full speed, which is his final hurdle.

yankees: 1B Mark Teixeira sat out a day after getting stitches in his left pinkie. He is day to day.
