PITTSBURGH — The Pirates are all-in in their pursuit of their first playoff appearance in 21 years.
Pittsburgh traded for longtime Twins 1B Justin Morneau on Saturday, hoping the four-time All-Star can give its middling offense a jolt heading into the final month of the season. Minnesota obtained OF Alex Presley and either a player to be named or cash.
Tuesday, the Pirates sent two minor-leaguers to the Mets in exchange for OF Marlon Byrd and C John Buck.
"We've got more depth, we've got more options than we had four days ago," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "We're a better team. We're a stronger team."
Pittsburgh leads the NL Central but is 10th in the NL in runs.
Morneau, 32, hit .259 with a .315 on-base percentage and a .426 slugging percentage this season for Minnesota. He has nine homers and a .543 slugging percentage in August.
In other Pirates news, closer Jason Grilli, on the disabled list since July 23 with a right forearm strain, began a minor-league rehab assignment at Double-A Altoona and could return to the majors this week.
