Bid on Central's history

As part of Central's gymnasium face lift over the next few weeks, the school will replace championship banners hanging in the south end of the building. Each one will be replaced with a single banner for each sport recognizing conference, district and region titles.

Central athletic director Jeff Spivey has decided to sell the old banners to help raise money. In an e-mail, Spivey indicated he would prefer to sell these items to former athletes and alumni, but added "interested parties" would be welcome to bid.

Spivey is asking for a $50 donation for the right to purchase a banner. If more than one person expresses interest, those parties will be asked to give a sealed bid with the highest bid getting the banner.

For more information contact Spivey at (352) 797-7020 ext. 230 or spivey_j@hcsb.k12.fl.us.

Free throws to have no free rebounds

You've got to rise pretty early in the morning to surprise us here at The Hub. Even those quirky offseason rule changes implemented when few notice rarely slip past us.

Case in point: a new prep basketball rule vacating the two marked lane spaces closest to the basket during free-throw attempts. The National Federation of State High School Associations, governing body for essentially the whole country including Florida, approved the rule recently in an effort to reduce rough play and fouls right under the basket during missed free throws.

Starting this fall, players will move back one lane space during a free-throw attempt. A new mark also will be applied to the lane line nearest the free-throw line to designate the last lane space. There is no change in the distance from the basket for the shooter.

"I'm pretty sure when I started we couldn't go to the low block, then they (allowed it) because they thought people were interfering with the shooter," Hudson fifth-year coach Jason Vetter said. "I think college moved it back last year or this year. I guess we're just trying to match that."

Mitchell signing

Mitchell outfielder Kayla Saastamoinen will sign a letter of intent Tuesday with Northwood University in West Palm. A Northwood coach found Saastamoinen during her time playing for the Tampa Wildcats, a traveling softball team. She was invited for an official visit in January and orally committed during her stay.

She will receive scholarship money for academics and athletics, meaning most of her education will be paid. Saastamoinen, who will major in sports management, hit .288 for Mitchell this season with four doubles, three triples and 17 runs scored.
