Ferlita resigns

as Cobras coach

Hudson baseball coach Vince Ferlita, whose clubs struggled to emerge from the Sunshine Athletic Conference cellar in his four seasons, confirmed Thursday that he has resigned to devote more time to family.

Ferlita, still a Cobras football assistant, led Hudson to a 12-12 mark in his inaugural season but never won more than four games in the ensuing three years. He didn't rule out the possibility of coaching baseball again.

"It was just time for me to take a step back and spend time with my 11-year-old (son) and reacquaint myself with my wife," said Ferlita, who has missed a number of his son Michael's games in the Greater Hudson Little League. "To be honest, I'm kind of relieved to get my feet back up underneath me, so to speak."

A former Jesuit High and USF baseball standout, Ferlita spent two years as Cobras junior varsity coach before being hired to replace Jack Ledbetter in 2004. A crash investigator for an insurance company, he earned an annual supplement of $2,387.

National weightlifting competition

10th-graders; 11th- and

12th-graders. The top eight finishers in each weight class will be honored, with the winners and runnersup being awarded trophies.

Recruiters dip into Shark tank

Football recruiting has picked up at Nature Coast. Several of the Sharks have been contacted or visited by colleges. Senior-to-be Michael Fields has garnered interest from USF, FIU, Western Michigan, Florida, Alabama State, the Citadel and Liberty. Howard Williams has started to get some looks from those same schools minus Florida. Other guys getting looks include Daniel Murray, Lindo Alfredo, Tadd Govedich, Dwayne Williams, Lane Dodson and Britt Langley.
