SPC's Halapio chooses Gators

St. Petersburg Catholic offensive lineman Jon Halapio has committed to Florida, according to athletic director John Gerdes. Halapio also had offers from USF, UCF, FIU, Troy and Colorado State.

According to Gatorbait.net, Halapio was named the offensive line MVP last month at the Gainesville Nike Camp. He is listed at

6-4, 300 pounds.

Pinellas Park sets deadline for applications

Pinellas Park athletic director Leslie Hopkins will accept applications for the boys basketball position until May 19.

The Patriots are looking for someone to replace Allen Carden, who took over at Clearwater. Hopkins said there are 10-15 applicants with about half coming from within the county. He said having a coach who is a teacher on campus is a high priority.

"We're looking for someone who is committed to the area and wants to build upon what we've already started here," Hopkins said.

Vince to coach

team in Italy

Clearwater's David Vince has been selected to coach a USA Athletes International Inc. baseball team in Italy, July 7-16. Former Tarpon Springs coach Dan Genna is an assistant.

The USA Athletes International Inc. team will compete against the Italian 18-and-under national team among others.

"Coach Vince sets the standard for bringing out the best in his players on the field" said Craig Gibbs, the baseball program coordinator at USA Athletes International.

Vince still is looking for three more players. Anyone interested should contact him at (727) 298-1620.

Three Falcons sign

Dunedin's John Toston, Robert Flagg and Ian Parham have signed to play football in college.

Toston, a receiver, is going to Chadron State, a Division II school in Nebraska. Flagg, a running back, is headed to the College of Wooster, another Division II school in Ohio. And Parham, a receiver, will play at Snow College, a junior college in Ephraim, Utah.

Purdy signs with Oglethorpe

Palm Harbor University's Sam Purdy has decided to play basketball for Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. This past season, Purdy averaged 12 points for the Hurricanes.

Dunedin's only state title in baseball came in 1964. The Falcons will try for another in Wednesday's Class 5A state semifinals against Brandon at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota.
