Detours: a country in search of direction
On the eve of the election, a reporter and photographer set out for Washington, via America. We tell stories from seven towns, touching on seven issues from politics and real life.
Friday Night Rewind It doesn't matter which team you cheer for. We've got video previews of every high school football program in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Hernando County.
Game show themes
These themes are probably going to make some of you have flashbacks to wasted mornings or afternoons spent sprawled in front of the TV.
Sickles freshman Alex Milan, an all-county performer last fall, has been selected to play in the prestigious Florida Cup, which features many of the state's top juniors. This year's event, which uses a Ryder Cup-like format, will be played Aug. 13-14 at Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club in Tampa.
Milan, who lives in Lutz, will play for the North Team. She was chosen because of her stellar junior record. After firing rounds of 74 and 78 at a Florida Junior Tour event last weekend, Milan moved into third in the girls' 13-15 standings, which gave her an automatic selection into the Florida Cup.
Chiefs' Williams on recruiting radar
Few local area football players have jumped onto the college recruiting landscape like Chamberlain wide receiver Anthony Williams.
While coming to Chamberlain practices to scope the Chiefs' breadth of college talent — quarterback Dontae Aycock and defensive lineman Dontavious Pyron — college coaches have taken notice of the 6-foot-2, 200-pound wideout, who just transferred from Jefferson, where he made 38 receptions for 388 yards and three touchdowns as a junior.
"It's been a crazy two weeks," Williams said. "I just didn't know I was that exposed. I didn't even think people knew I was here."
Marshall offered Williams on site. Georgia soon followed. An official offer from Ole Miss is expected.
Houston offers Cooley
The recruitment of Plant guard Sheldon Cooley has picked up significantly. In recent days, Houston has offered a scholarship and Marquette, one of the country's elite programs, has expressed serious interest, Plant coach Mike Phillips said. Houston is the third school to offer the 6-foot-2 guard, a rising senior. East Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech are the others.
Marquette called Phillips last Thursday, telling him "they really liked what they saw."
Cooley, the Times' Hillsborough Player of the Year, averaged 22.1 points, 8.7 rebounds and five steals as a junior. This spring, he has been a major contributor as a shooting guard for Florida Elite, which won the state AAU 17-and-under title last weekend in Clearwater. He's averaging about 15 points.

Santoni heading to Loyola
Tampa Prep senior Ryan Santoni has decided to decommit to Florida Gulf Coast and is planning on signing a letter of intent with Loyola of New Orleans within the next day, his father John Santoni said Wednesday.
Santoni led the Terrapins with a .438 batting average while going 4-3 with a 3.37 ERA in seven starts. He also has a team-high 18 stolen bases in 20 attempts.
He was a preferred walk-on at Division I Florida Gulf Coast, but his father said he would have the opportunity to pitch and play outfield as a freshman at Loyola, an NAIA program.
