CCC’s James Dowdell hauled in a lot of honors this past season.

CCC's Dowdell picks Boston College

The early signing period for baseball is not until November, but Clearwater Central Catholic standout James Dowdell spared himself and his family the barrage of recruiters' calls by deciding on Boston College.

Dowdell, a senior-to-be, was a Times first-team, all-county and all-Suncoast selection, as well as a first-team, all-state pick in Class 3A.

This past season, the outfielder batted .450 with a team-leading nine home runs as the Marauders' leadoff hitter.

Three Packers sign

Three players from Largo's 2007 football team that advanced to the Class 5A state semifinals have signed letters of intent.

Reggie McCray is going to East Mississippi Junior College. Last season, McCray was a first-team, all-county selection and the Packers' leading receiver.

Billy Peach is headed to Jacksonville. A key member of the offensive line, Peach also was a first-team all-county selection and helped pave the way for Brynn Harvey to break the county record for rushing yards in a season.

Malcolm Durham is off to Bethune-Cookman. He played on both sides of the ball and was a key member of Largo's secondary.

Northeast soccer star signs with Longwood

Bojan Mijatovic received a full athletic scholarship to D-I Longwood University in Farmville, Va., to play soccer. Mijatovic, a forward who helped lead Northeast to a second-place district finish (5A-11) and spot in the region quarterfinals, was a Times second-team all-county pick.

Dixie Hollins sends two to Tabor

Tabor College, an NAIA school in Hillsboro, Kan., has found success this recruiting season mining Pinellas County for football talent. Recently, the Bluejays landed their third county signee in Quentin Webb Jr., a 6-foot-2, 275-pound defensive tackle from Dixie Hollins who finished third for the Rebels in tackles.

Webb joins teammate Chris Sanborn, who signed with Tabor in April. A defensive end for Dixie Hollins, Sanborn had 75 tackles, nine forced fumbles and five sacks as a senior.

Largo defensive lineman Alvin Miller Jr. signed a letter of intent with Tabor in February.
