Game show themes
These themes are probably going to make some of you have flashbacks to wasted mornings or afternoons spent sprawled in front of the TV.
King rising senior forward Toarlyn Fitzpatrick began last week with scholarship offers from Florida State, Miami and Tulane. You can now add Division I Hofstra and Mercer to the list.
The 6-foot-8 Fitzpatrick probably won't make a decision until next year. But for now, he calls Tulane the leader.
"I think I like their coach the best," he said. "He calls the most. He's a real cool guy. I think I'd play more as a freshman there."
Fitzpatrick has had a busy summer. In addition to competing in the Southeast Basketball Academy Summer League, he played at an event in New York and participated in a camp at Stetson. Later this month, he'll play in Las Vegas.
Thomas' pro baseball dream delayed
Former Middleton standout Corey Thomas, who signed a pro contract with the Orioles after Baltimore selected him in the 13th round of this year's MLB draft, has a serious knee injury that will delay his pro debut.
Rich Arena, Thomas' adviser, said Thomas has an ACL injury that will require surgery. Arena said he is confident Thomas will play this season.
"I don't think it's going to keep me out that long," Thomas said. "It's a little bump. I am disappointed because I wanted to get the ball rolling out there."
Arena said the injury occurred during Thomas' first practice with the Orioles in Sarasota as he was fielding a grounder at third.
"It was like his third ball," Arena said. "A horrible thing."
16 Black club team moves on in pool play
The Tampa Bay Juniors 16 Black club volleyball team won its first two matches of pool play in the 16 Open Division of the USA Volleyball Junior Olympics, both in straight sets. Pool play continues with two matches today and two Thursday.
Plant seven-on-seven team places third
The Plant football team reached the semifinals of the Adidas 7-on-7 High School Football Tournament over the weekend at the University of Central Florida.
It was stopped two victories from the title by Pahokee, the defending seven-on-seven national champion.
Miami Booker T. Washington, which won the Class 4A state title last fall, defeated Pahokee in the final 20-12. Both finalists advance to the national tournament July 30-31 in Atlanta.
