Oldsmar Christian guard shines at camp

Oldsmar Christian guard Chris Perez displayed his skills at the recent Reebok All-American Camp, a weeklong event in Philadelphia featuring 150 of the top high school basketball prospects in the country.

Perez, a second-team Class A all-state selection who averaged 29.5 points a game this past season for the Eagles, was ranked as one of the top 10 shooting guards at the camp by Hoop Scoop, according to Oldsmar Christian coach Ryan Pannone.

With nearly every major Division-I head coach in attendance at the July 6-10 event, the camp is considered one of the best avenues to recruiting exposure.

"Tracy McGrady came to this camp unknown and left as the No. 1 player in the country," Pannone said. "This camp is the most important basketball event in any player's basketball career. They'll play in front of more college coaches that week than they will their entire high school career."

A 6-foot-4 senior-to-be, Perez holds scholarship offers from Ole Miss, Delaware, James Madison and Tennessee Tech, among others. He said he's trying to garner as many offers as he can before making a decision. He said his options remain open right now.

"I want to see how I do at the camp and the rest of the summer before I commit," he said. "I'll do it when I feel the time is right."

Little League

East Lake beat Countryside 4-2 to win the District 12 11-12 major baseball title Friday at West Pasco.

Countryside put runners at second and third with no outs in the final (sixth) inning, but reliever David Paul struck out the next three batters to send East Lake to next weekend's sectional tournament at Cross Bayou Little League in Seminole. Mario Micketti hit a two-run homer for East Lake.

Sunday: Dunedin plays Clearwater at 1 p.m. at the Engelbert Complex for the District 12 13-14 baseball title.
