Plant High captured a national seven-on-seven football championship Friday evening, rallying for a 30-14 triumph against Henry (Ga.) County in the finals of the inaugural Nike "7 On" tournament in Beaverton, Ore.

Friday's win was the sixth in two days for Plant, which won three contests each day. The Panthers allowed 89 total points in the event, one less than the total they scored the first day.

The Panthers, trailing 14-7 at halftime of the final, got an interception from Hunter Baldwin on the first play of the second half to begin a spurt of 23 unanswered points.

Senior quarterback Aaron Murray, a University of Georgia commitment, was named tournament MVP. In the semifinals, a 32-13 triumph against California's Mater Dei High, Murray outperformed USC commitment Matt Barkley, and linebacker Mike Mirabella had three interceptions.

Other Panthers named to the all-tournament team were Mirabella, tight end Orson Charles, receiver Nathan Marvel and defensive back Javonte Martin.

CCC's Weber makes U18 National Team

Former Clearwater Central Catholic pitcher Ryan Weber was selected for the U18 USA National Team on Wednesday.

It is the second time Weber has made a national team. The right-hander also played for last year's U18 team, which won a bronze medal at the Pan Am Games.

This year's team will compete in the IBAF World Junior Championships in Edmonton, Alberta, from July 25 to Aug. 3.

Hillsborough catcher Marlon Mitchell also participated in the U18 team trials but wasn't selected.

Local Pitch, Hit and Run finalist takes second

Valrico 13-year-old Raelynn Nichols finished second in her age group at the MLB Pitch, Hit and Run national finals Monday at Yankee Stadium.

Nichols, an eighth-grader at Mulrennan Middle in Valrico, was one of three finalists in the girls 13-14 age division.

She was one of 24 competitors who were invited to compete in the national finals before the Home Run Derby during MLB All-Star Game festivities.

The competition ran a softball pilot program in 10 MLB markets this year. In year's past, the Pitch, Run and Hit competition had both boys and girls competing in baseball activities.

To advance to the finals, Nichols had to win her local competition in Tampa Bay and then place in the top three in a super-regional competition in Winter Haven.

Nichols batted .376 with 10 stolen bases for the Florida Fire fast-pitch club softball team.

The MLB Pitch, Run and Hit competition, the official youth competition of Major League Baseball, is a grassroots program that began in 1996. Open to boys and girls ages 7 to 14, the program had more than 600,000 participants through more than 4,000 local competitions in four different age categories.
