TAMPA — Former Guy Toph Award winner and current Middleton assistant coach Keith Newman was arrested Monday morning and charged with five third-degree felony counts, according to police reports.
Newman, who played linebacker in the NFL for parts of eight seasons with the Bills, Falcons, Vikings and Dolphins, was arrested by city of Tampa police at 9:40 Monday morning and faces one count of third-degree grand theft and four counts of deposit with fraud, according to the arrest affidavit.
He coaches linebackers at Middleton.
Middleton head coach Harry Hubbard, who coached Newman in high school when he was an assistant at Jefferson, heard of Newman's arrest before Monday's practice.
"Just wait and pray, that's all I can do," Hubbard said.
According to the affidavit, an outstanding warrant for Newman's arrest has been issued since Sept. 2. As of Monday afternoon, he was being held at Orient Road Jail on $10,000 bond.
Newman, 31, won the Guy Toph Award as a senior at Jefferson in 1994.
After a stellar college career at North Carolina, he recorded 23 career sacks in the NFL. He was an assistant coach at Middleton last year, coached linebackers this past spring at Armwood, then was back at Middleton this offseason.
