Pinellas swimming: Palm Harbor University boys stretch region title win streak to seven

SARASOTA — Since the region was added to the swimming postseason schedule in 2004, Palm Harbor University has claimed every boys team title.

But before the Hurricanes could stretch their streak to seven years, they had to survive their toughest test at Saturday's Class 3A, Region 2 meet at the Sarasota YMCA. The main threat was rival Countryside, which was bolstered by the addition of Matt Ellis, a transfer from Texas.

PHU won just two events, but it scored in every event except diving. That kind of depth in point-scoring allowed the Hurricanes to win again, edging the Cougars 287-267.

"As our boys go from one level to the next, it continues to be a test of how our strong our depth is," PHU coach Lisa Bitting said.

The Hurricanes' 200-yard medley relay of Ryan McRae, David Morgan, Zach Perrotti and Jason Williams won in 1 minute, 38.91 seconds. McRae also won the 100 back in 53.18. Bitting was most pleased with the 400 free relay, which was seeded 13th and placed seventh, which could be enough to qualify all three relays for next week's state meet.

PHU needed every single point-scorer it could get to hold off Countryside's star power.

Ellis came up big for the Cougars with wins in the 50 free (21.29) and 100 free (51.24). He also teamed with Richard Willsey, Jon Witkowski and John Kelly to win the 200 free relay in 1:27.29, and he swam anchor leg on the first-place 400 free relay (3:12.35) that included Willsey, Kelly and Gary Lush. Kelly also won the 100 free in 47.20.

Clearwater's Nick Alexiou beat his toughest competitor, Sarasota Riverview's Nicholas Caldwell to win the 200 free in 1:39.18 and took third in the 500 free in 4:34.40.

Northeast's Tyler Burrows won diving with 483.10 points. Seminole's Matt Thompson took first in the 200 individual medley (1:54.08) and teammate Zac Metka was a champion in the 100 breast (58.46).

On the girls side, Palm Harbor University took second in the team standings with 257 points, the highest finish among county teams behind Sarasota Riverview.

St. Petersburg's Jessica Piper won the 100 back (57.12). Seminole's Hannah Roper won the 100 breast (1:06.06), and East Lake's Alexia Gonzalez took first in diving with 426 points.
