Blue Jackets trample Leafs

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Nick Foligno and Boone Jenner each scored, backup goalie Joonas Korpisalo made 31 saves and the Blue Jackets beat the Maple Leafs 5-2 on Wednesday night.

Columbus moved into a tie with Pittsburgh for second place in the Metropolitan Division two days before the Penguins visit Nationwide Arena. The Penguins face the Jets tonight.

Nazem Kadri scored both goals for Toronto, which squandered a chance to move ahead of Ottawa and Boston for second place in the Atlantic Division.

Blues streak on: Carter Hutton made 25 saves and the Blues won their fifth straight, 2-0 over the host Red Wings. St. Louis is 6-1-0 since firing Ken Hitchcock as coach. Detroit missed a chance to get out of the Eastern Conference basement.

Around the league: Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist was suspended for six games for using the blade of his stick to spear Wild defenseman Jared Spurgeon just below his left eye Sunday. … Ducks center Antoine Vermette was facing a suspension for abuse of an official. He was ejected from Tuesday's game against the Wild when he slashed linesman Shandor Alphonso on the back of the legs in the third period after a lost faceoff. Vermette appeared frustrated that Alphonso dropped the puck early. NHL rules have three categories of abuse of officials. The length of Vermette's suspension would depend on the category applied. A hearing was Wednesday.
