Rays rail: Scott to put boar's head on display

Quote of the day

"I didn't want to. I was out there to win today."

RHP Alex Cobb, on not telling hitters what was coming in live batting practice

Pepper party

Around many ballfields there are signs posted saying NO PEPPER, banning the simple game where a player hits tossed balls back at a small group. Tuesday, during a break between drills, Sam Fuld and a few other Rays got a good game going, and with no objections. "You should be able to play pepper wherever you want," Fuld said. "In the clubhouse, in the food room, in the shower."

Who is this Ray?

He is a native of Hawaii who, naturally, is a surfer. Played at Arizona's Yavapai Junior College, which produced Curt Schilling, Bob Howry and Rays prospect Parker Markel. Was drafted by Boston in 2005, signed with the Rays as a free agent.

In the spirit

LHP Jake McGee said it was purely coincidence he was paired in Monday's golf tourney with a team from Advantica that showed up wearing kilts, which, while more popular in Scotland, are also prominent in Ireland. McGee is Irish and during the offseason visited his homeland. And if they had brought a fifth? "I would have worn one," McGee said. "No problem."

Head in the game

Luke Scott plans to keep the stuffed boar's head he brought to the clubhouse Monday on display, asking the staff to mount it on his locker at the Charlotte Sports Park then move it to the Trop for similar treatment. Also in the works: a name.
