Marc Topkin’s takeaways from Rays’ game Friday against Indians

Avisail Garcia takes advantage of opportunity; Pham extends hitting streak; Yarbrough eases concerns.

• There wasn’t a lot that went right for the Rays Friday, but give catcher Travis d’Arnaud credit for one heck of a game behind the plate. Though there was one wild pitch by Blake Snell, d’Arnaud probably saved a half dozen others with a series of blocks and quick reactions.

• Injuries created some opportunity for additional playing time against right-handers, but credit Avisail Garcia for taking advantage of it. Manager Kevin Cash said Friday what has seemed obvious: “He’s forced our hand; he’s going to be in the lineup.’’

• Tommy Pham, who extended his hitting streak Friday to 10 games, holds himself to a very high standard, constantly seeking improvement. He said he’s making “good progress,” noting he isn’t rolling over on inside pitches and he’s staying through outside ones.
