CHICAGO — Clay Buchholz pitched seven five-hit innings to improve to 7-0, and the Red Sox avoided a three-game sweep. Boston backed Buchholz with several strong defensive plays. Former Ray Jonny Gomes made a sliding catch on Paul Konerko's line drive to left with two on to end the first. Jacoby Ellsbury raced to the centerfield warning track to snag Alexei Ramirez's liner with a runner on and two out in the fifth.
