BOSTON — Red Sox LHP Jon Lester will start Game 1 of the World Series against the Cardinals.
The word came Monday from Boston manager John Farrell.
Farrell said he hasn't decided on his entire lineup, but DH David Ortiz will start at least once at first base when the series shifts to St. Louis for the middle three games. There is no DH allowed in the NL park, meaning Ortiz will have to play the field for the seventh time this season.
The Red Sox worked out Monday. Game 1 of the World Series is Wednesday night at Fenway Park.
ROOKIE AT READY: Cardinals RHP Shelby Miller, who has pitched once since Sept. 25, pitched a two-inning simulated game Sunday to try to keep his arm fresh if he's called on during the World Series.
Manager Mike Matheny told mlb.com that Miller could be used in long relief, though there are still no plans to start him.
"The idea for Shelby and the conversation with Shelby from Day 1 is that he could have an expanded role at any point," Matheny said. "He needs to stay sharp."
VEGAS FAVORS SOX: Oddsmakers made Boston a minus-140 favorite to win the World Series, meaning a gambler would have to risk $140 to win $100 on the Red Sox becoming champions. St. Louis was made a plus-120 underdog.
