Red Wings top Sharks for 4th win in row

DETROIT — Jimmy Howard made 30 saves and Gustav Nyquist scored twice, helping the Red Wings beat the Sharks 3-0 on Saturday night for their fourth straight win.

Andreas Athanasiou also scored for Detroit. Howard got his 23rd career shutout and his first this season.

The Sharks, the defending Western Conference champions, have lost three of four.

Nyquist scored twice in the second period to give Detroit a 2-0 lead. He has three goals on the season.

Athanasiou was placed in the lineup after Justin Abdelkader was a late scratch.

Game highlights: Shane Harper scored his first two NHL goals to lift the host Panthers over the Avalanche 5-2. Vincent Trocheck and former Lightning forward Jonathan Marchessault each had a goal and an assist, and Aaron Ekblad also scored a goal for the Panthers. Roberto Luongo made 26 saves. Matt Duchene and Blake Comeau scored goals for the Avalanche. … Kevin Fiala and Viktor Arvidsson scored two goals each to lead the short-handed Predators to a 5-1 victory over the visiting Penguins. Goalie Juuse Saros, an emergency callup, had 34 saves for his first NHL victory as the Predators snapped a three-game skid. Four Predators, including starting goalie Pekka Rinne, were sidelined with food poisoning that affected several players over the past two games. General manager David Poile said the culprit was chicken soup. … Jonathan Toews and Artemi Panarin scored in the shootout to give the host Blackhawks a 5-4 win over the Maple Leafs after Chicago came back with two late goals to force overtime. Toronto blew a lead in the final period for the third straight game. … Jakub Voracek scored twice and the Flyers pulled away from the Hurricanes for a 6-3 victory. The Hurricanes fell to 1-2-2 on the fifth stop of their season-opening six-game road trip. … Carey Price stopped 19 shots in his second start, and Brian Gallagher and Phillip Danault each had second-period goals to lift the Canadiens to a 4-2 win over the host Bruins. … Taylor Hall scored 29 seconds into overtime and the host Devils rallied to beat the Wild 2-1. … Rookie Jimmy Vesey scored the tying and go-ahead goals 3 minutes apart in the second period to lead the Rangers to a 4-2 victory over the host Capitals. … Sergei Bobrovsky made 32 saves in his 13th career shutout and the Blue Jackets beat the host Stars 3-0.

Ex-Lightning coach Demers has second stroke: Former Lightning coach Jacques Demers was hospitalized in Montreal after suffering a second stroke this year, media reports said. No details were available. Demers, 72, had a stroke in April. Demers, who coached the Canadiens to the Stanley Cup in 1993, was at Montreal's home opener Tuesday night, smiling while sitting in a wheelchair during pregame ceremonies.

    An Alabama man who shot and killed the 17-year-old brother of Bucs linebacker Kwon Alexander in 2015 was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday, the Anniston (Ala.) Star reported.
