Reformulated Magic fizzles against Hawks

ATLANTA — Al Horford scored 24 and the Hawks rolled to a 91-81 victory over Dwight Howard and the reconstructed Magic on Monday night.

Orlando, which hasn't had time to practice since acquiring Gilbert Arenas, Jason Richardson and Hedo Turkoglu on Saturday, struggled to find an offensive flow all night.

After setting a season low with 14 points in the first quarter, the Magic was held without a field goal for the first eight minutes of the final period. The Hawks led by 17 when Richardson finally ended the drought.

Howard had 19 points and 20 rebounds but too little help. Jameer Nelson scored 18, but Arenas made only 2 of 11 shots for 10 points. Richardson had nine points and Turkoglu eight.

Arenas, playing as a reserve, sank a 3-pointer in the first period on his first shot with the Magic but couldn't build off it.

The Hawks had better balance with five scorers in double figures. Joe Johnson had 17 points, including 13 in the second half. Mike Bibby scored 15 while hurting Orlando with three 3-pointers. Josh Smith had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Marvin Williams had 12 points and nine rebounds. Horford grabbed 11 rebounds as Atlanta claimed a 51-38 advantage on the boards.

The Magic shot only 25 percent from the field in the first quarter and finished at 35.2 percent for the game.

The game was the first chance for Magic coach Stan Van Gundy to have his new team together on the court since two trades Saturday provided a dramatic facelift.

Arenas was acquired from Washington. Richardson, Turkoglu and Earl Clark were acquired from Phoenix. The Magic lost Rashard Lewis, Vince Carter, Mickael Pietrus and Marcin Gortat, plus a 2011 first-round draft pick, in the deals.

The Magic's plans for a morning shootaround were scrapped because the new players had to take physicals. All passed.

Nowitzki, Mavs halt Heat's streak at 12

MIAMI — Dirk Nowitzki scored 26, Jason Terry hit two 3-pointers in the final 2½ minutes, and the Mavericks ended the Heat's 12-game winning streak, 98-96 on Monday night.

It was Dallas' 14th straight regular-season win over the Heat, and the Mavericks were the last team to beat Miami this season, too. Dallas has now ended six opponent winning streaks of at least five games this season.

Dwyane Wade scored 22, while LeBron James and Chris Bosh each scored 19 for Miami. Mike Miller made his first appearance for the Heat but missed all four of his shots.

The Heat had one possession last 52 seconds, with eight shots.

It all started when Nowitzki missed a 3-pointer and Miller got the defensive rebound for Miami with 2:45 remaining. Miller got two of Miami's seven offensive rebounds in the next 45 seconds, all before Mario Chalmers, finally, connected on a 3 with 1:53 left for a 42-39 lead.

Game highlights: CJ Miles scored 22 and the Jazz beat the host Cavaliers 101-90, moving coach Jerry Sloan into a tie with Pat Riley for the third-most wins in NBA history (1,210). Up next is Lenny Wilkens (1,332) and Don Nelson (1,335). … Mike Dunleavy's tip-in at the buzzer gave the host Pacers a 94-93 victory over the Hornets. … The host Wizards limited the Bobcats to one field goal in the third quarter and ended a seven-game skid with a 108-75 victory.

Around the league: The NBA's board of governors gave its approval to complete the league's purchase of the Hornets from majority owner George Shinn and minority owner Gary Chouest. Commissioner David Stern says the franchise is worth about $300 million, and the league will try to sell the club to a more permanent owner, preferably one that would keep the team in New Orleans. … Bucks guard Brandon Jennings will miss 4-6 weeks after surgery to repair a broken bone in his left foot.
