SEFFNER — The North Brandon Family YMCA will host the NFL Punt, Pass & Kick (PPK) competition on Sept. 14 at 1 p.m.
The competition is free and open to any child ages 6-15. All participants must register through the NFL PPK website or at the North Brandon Y by contacting Irene Rapoza at (813) 685-5402 or Irene.Rapoza@tampaymca.org. Check-in starts at noon on Sept. 14 at the North Brandon Y on 3097 S Kingsway Road in Seffner.
The PPK program is a national skills competition for boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 15 to compete separately against their peers. Established in 1961, the PPK program is the oldest NFL Youth Football program. Girls and boys in five separate age divisions (6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13 and 14-15) compete against each other in punting, passing and place kicking in a fun and engaging forum.
This is an NFL-sanctioned competition with specific rules listed on the NFL PPK website.
Red Cross offers safety training
The beginning of school marks the return of athletic play for many students, so the American Red Cross offers training and resources on how to treat a variety of emergencies and injuries that may occur throughout the sports season.
Safe Kids Worldwide reports that every 25 seconds a child is hurt playing sports and that more than 1 million emergency room visits are made because of sports injuries each year.
Red Cross has developed a number of resources for everyone involved in sports and recreational activities: First Aid, Health and Safety for coaches is an online program for teens and adults who coach at any age level; Family First Aid and CPR is an online course for those not required to have OSHA-compliant certification; American Red Cross First Aid App is a free app for smartphones and tablets.
Information on courses and additional resources are available at redcross.org.
